Position Purpose
This individual will be responsible for the management and support of the chemistry department's pioneering research instrumentation. The individual in this position will serve as an expert and liaison for intra- and inter-departmental analytical chemistry involving spectroscopic, chromatographic, and other types of instrumentation. The maintenance, user training, consulting, and advising of safe and effective instrumentation use are key responsibilities. The Instrument Specialist will work collaboratively and cooperatively with the Instrument Core Facilities manager.

Required Qualifications - Education and Yrs Exp Bachelors plus 3-5 years' experience or equivalent combination of education and experience

Education and Experience
  • BA/BS in Chemistry or a closely related field of study.
  • At least 3 - 5 years of relevant experience in an industrial or academic laboratory, or the equivalent.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
  • Strong knowledge of research equipment used by chemists.
  • Experience in operating and maintaining analytical equipment and instrumentation.
  • Ability and desire to solve analytical, instrumentation, and software issues.
  • Good interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to work with and instruct faculty, staff, and graduate and undergraduate students in the operation of analytical equipment.
  • Willingness to handle hazardous materials safely.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Good organizational and time management skills.
  • Work independently.
  • Learn new skills and take initiative in areas of responsibility.

Key Accountabilities

Description
Instrument Maintenance
  • Upkeep/maintenance/calibration of the NMRs, LC-MSMS, Raman, CD, XRD, AFM, and other departmental spectrometers and instruments. Individual will be trained on unfamiliar instrumentation.
Percentage Of Time 40%
Description
Installation and maintenance - computing hardware and software
  • Assist researchers with hardware and software installations.
  • Assist researchers with computer/instrumentation interfaces.
Percentage Of Time 20%
Description
User Training
  • Train new users on departmental spectrometers and instruments.
  • Assist researchers in design of experimentation on departmental spectrometers and instruments.
Percentage Of Time 15%
Description
Maintain helium recovery system in Chemistry and Physics
Percentage Of Time 15%
Description
Maintain NMR spectrometer and x-ray diffractometer cryogens
  • Fill liquid nitrogen and helium in the high field NMR spectrometers.
  • Fill liquid nitrogen in x-ray diffractometer cryostat.
Percentage Of Time 10%
