Position Purpose
The Bomberger Lab (Department of Microbiology and Immunology) is seeking applicants for a Research Assistant I to support the laboratory's research program, maintain efficient laboratory functioning and conduct experiments studying viral-bacterial coinfections as they relate to host-pathogen interactions in the cystic fibrosis lung environment. Prior experience in aseptic technique, bacteriology, bacterial cloning and/or cell culture would be preferred. This is an excellent opportunity for candidates who seek laboratory experience for two or more years prior to applying for graduate or medical school and also provides experience relevant to biotech. Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
Competence in several laboratory methods, procedures and techniques as well as the equipment and instruments. Ability to work independently with good judgment and good organizational and time management skills. Willingness to work with/be exposed to hazardous materials such as radioactive materials, infectious materials, and/or hazardous chemicals. Knowledge of computers and software applications.

Key Accountabilities

Description
Maintains effective laboratory function. This includes tasks like ordering and restocking of lab supplies and providing timely documentation to departmental administrators; completing and delegating daily chores to maintain clean and safe working lab environment; maintains monthly lab spending logs and coordinates with grant manager on lab spending; monitors laboratory equipment and instrument performance; obtains maintenance and repair, as necessary. Makes and maintains various agar plates and specialized medias required in lab.

Description
Instructs others in laboratory methods, procedures, and techniques and provides technical guidance and direction, as required. Maintains computerized records associated with laboratory activities, including chemical and freezer inventories. Coordinates undergraduate lab chores with undergraduate research supervisor in lab. Provides regular general laboratory updates at weekly lab meeting. Updates lab website quarterly.

Description
With supervision, conducts laboratory experiments; identifies, troubleshoots, and corrects or recommends solutions to problems associated with experimental design; methods, procedures, and techniques; or equipment and facilities; modifies research methods, procedures, and techniques to meet the unique requirements of assigned research problems.

Description
Prepares appropriate and understandable representations of data such as graphs, charts, tables, statistical summaries, etc. Analyzes data resulting from experimentation/testing. Summarizes results and prepares progress reports for oral presentation.
